D’Andre Dennis joins DWU basketball (Audio)

The DWU Tigers men’s basketball program gained one more over the weekend. D’Andre Dennis, a 6-5, 190-pound wing from McCook Community College in Nebraska announced his commitment to the Tigers over Twitter on Sunday.

Dennis talked about his decision to commit to DWU

“Throughout this year, Dakota Wesleyan was on me pretty early,” Dennis said. “Before the season even got started, they had showed interest in me already, so that was a big thing that swayed me toward Dakota Wesleyan.”

Dennis was coached under former DWU associate head coach Jacob Brandl at McCook. Dennis started 20 games for McCook last year and averaged 7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and shot 35% from 3-point range.

Dennis will come in with two years of eligibility remaining.

Dennis is an Indian Trail, North Carolina native  in the greater Charlotte Area and made his first trip out West this past year to play for McCook Community College. He said the weather was one thing to get used to – but it was something else that had him scratching his head when he first spent some time in Southern Nebraska.

“The biggest thing was honestly just how friendly people are,” he said.

Dennis went on to explain further.

“Coming from the city, you’re just taught to mind your business — don’t stare at people, you know, or just things like that,” Dennis said. “Coming out here it was really different and opened my eyes to a lot of different things, just as far as driving by and people wave at you. That’s just something they do.”

I asked D’Andre if he’s going to join in with the locals and start waving?

“Well see the thing is, when they wave, and I’m not expecting it, and it’ll catch me off guard, and I don’t wave back, I tend to feel bad about it,” he said. “So now I’ve put it in my head like I’ve got to start waving back at everybody.”

Dennis is graduating with his associates degree in business in the spring at McCook – and is set to pursue his bachelor’s in the fall with two years of eligibility remaining.

He also said he wants to get out to Mitchell as soon as he can to start preparing for the upcoming season. So if you see him, feel free to smile – and of course Wave Hello!
