Mitchell — Seventeen-year-old Riley Rothschadl was stellar in his first career Class B state amateur game. The senior-to-be at Bon Homme High School pitched 6 2/3 innings and struck out nine — including the final batter he faced — before Legion baseball rules restricted the Tabor pick-up player from continuing on the mound.

Rothschadl also scored both of Tabor’s runs on a run scored and RBI — but it wasn’t enough, as the Canova Gang scored runs in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings to advance in the SDABA state tournament on Friday 3-2 over the Tabor Bluebirds.

The tying run came on a Garrett Gassman walk with the bases loaded by Bryce Scieszinski. Scieszinski was saddled with the loss. Derek Miller started on the mound for Canova and threw 135 pitches in 9.0 IP with 1 earned run and seven Ks. Justin Miller pitched one inning of relief and earned the win.

Canova plays either Lennox Only One or Wynot on Monday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Cadwell Park and will be aired on Kool 98.3 FM.
