PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELL NOW) Three significant deadlines await legislators returning from their four-day Presidents’ Day holiday break.
Today (Tuesday) is the last day to move bills or resolutions to the house of origin.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the last day to pass bills or joint resolutions by the house of origin, otherwise known as “Crossover Day.”
Friday is the last day to move special appropriations to the house of origin.
All week, the Joint Committee on Appropriations will hear many bills requesting money, some outside Gov. Kristi Noem’s proposed budget. The revenue projection for the rest of Fiscal Year 2024 is $41 million more than the governor’s original estimate. FY2025’s estimate is $21 million over what Noem recommended last December. Whether the extra money goes to funding prison construction or other projects will be in tension.
