PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) With Independence Day recently over and inflation continuing to threaten Americans’ financial independence, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2024’s Most Independent States, as well as expert commentary. This report follows WalletHub’s report on the Most Patriotic States.
To determine the most self-sufficient states, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on five sources of dependency: consumer finances, the government, the job market, international trade and personal vices. You can find highlights from the report below.
Independence in South Dakota (1=Best; 25=Avg.):
- Overall Rank: 6th
- 27th – Share of Adults Saving for Children’s College Education
- 8th – Share of Households Receiving Public Assistance
- 8th – Long-Term Unemployment Rate
- 9th – Industry Variety
- 25th – Share of Current Adult Smokers
South Dakota came in number 29 for financial dependency, 15 for dependency on government programs and 19 for international trade dependency. The higher the number means the less dependent a state is.
