MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The State Department of Transportation provides the funding, using revenue from license plate fees and non-commercial vehicle fees. The Legislature established the bridge improvement grants in 2015.  The department received 40 applications from 21 counties for this round.

Twenty counties in South Dakota will get state grants to help start dealing with troubled highway bridges.  The South Dakota Transportation Commission awarded the grants during their meeting yesterday, Thursday August 30, 3034. The 35 grants totaled $1,847,000. The assistance offsets some of a county’s preliminary expenses for activities such as planning and engineering.

Counties receiving awards on Thursday were Aurora, Bon Homme, Brookings, Buffalo, Butte, Codington, Douglas, Edmunds, Grant, Hanson, Hutchinson, Kingsbury, Lawrence, Meade, Minnehaha, Roberts, Sanborn, Sully, Tripp and Union.

Applications for five projects were set aside or withdrawn. Those were for two bridges in Beadle County and one bridge each in Bon Homme, Butte and Roberts counties.
