MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Goal Achieved and Surpassed:
o The 2024 campaign goal of $475,000 was exceeded, with a final total of $491,333—This years goal was set to be $25,000 more than last year’s goal.
o This achievement reflects the growth and increasing impact of Mitchell United Way in addressing community needs.
- Last-Minute Generosity:
o Over $150,000 in donations were received during the last few weeks of the campaign, showcasing the community’s strong support.
- Leadership and Growth:
o Ashley Hobbs, in her second year as Executive Director, has been a consistent presence in the community year-round, working to educate the public about United Way agencies and their services.
o Hobbs facilitated quarterly meetings with agencies to encourage collaboration, foster communication, and increase education and awareness.
o Liz Salmonson, BankWest Branch Manager, served as this year’s Campaign Chair, providing strong leadership and community engagement to rally support.
o United Way has prioritized showcasing the work of partner agencies to ensure everyone in the community has access to the incredible services they provide.
- Expanded Support:
o Five new programs were added to United Way’s support network this year:
- In A Village
- Mitchell Food Pantry
- MAC Area Events
- Mitchell Area Council of the Arts
- Heart and Sole
o This expansion demonstrates United Way’s commitment to adapting to evolving community needs.
- CPR/AED Awareness Initiative:
o The Declan Hobbs CPR/AED Awareness Fund was introduced this year, providing free CPR training to over 30 teachers and daycare providers.
o United Way collaborated with the City of Mitchell to take steps toward becoming a Cardiac Ready Community.
o Upcoming initiatives will focus on community education about AED placement and ensuring access to these lifesaving devices throughout the area.
- Meeting Increased Needs:
o United Way agencies reported heightened funding requests due to budget constraints and cuts, making this year’s campaign results even more critical.
- Workplace Giving Power:
o Over 80% of campaign contributions were made through payroll deduction and workplace giving programs, reflecting strong support from local businesses and their employees.
- Celebrating Success with a Fresh Approach:
o This year, the traditional luncheon was replaced with a Mix and Mingle celebration, allowing attendees to come and go from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
o The new format accommodates busy schedules while fostering a more inclusive and community-focused atmosphere.

o Funds will support 33 local agencies addressing critical areas such as food security, housing, education, healthcare, and arts.
