MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) At the Mitchell School Board meeting on March 10, Superintendent Joe Childs shared that the district made progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, with a 4.7% overall improvement. Mitchell Middle School saw a 3% drop in absenteeism. Attendance liaison Aaron Klinger played a key role in helping students stay in school, particularly at the middle school. Schools like Gertie Belle Rogers and L.B. Williams showed strong improvements, with absenteeism down by 15% and 28%, respectively. Childs also highlighted efforts to ease transitions for students moving from elementary to middle school. Board member Deb Olson praised the district’s progress, noting Mitchell’s absenteeism is better than many other districts post-COVID. The meeting also covered personnel updates and a proposal to rename MTI Drive to Mitchell Tech Drive. The next meeting is set for April 14.
