MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — South Dakota families with long-held farms and ranches are once again being invited to apply for recognition through the state’s Century Farm and Ranch program.

The program is a partnership between the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the South Dakota Farm Bureau. To qualify, applicants must have maintained continuous ownership of at least 80 acres of the original farmland for 100 years or more. Families who have owned their land for 125 or 150 years can also apply for special recognition.

Applications are due Friday, Aug. 1, 2026. Organizers also require documentation showing the original date of purchase.

Recognized families will be honored during the South Dakota State Fair in Huron on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m. on the South Dakota Farm Bureau Dakotaland Stage.

Application forms are available through the South Dakota Farm Bureau’s Century Farm and Ranch page or by calling 605-353-8050, according to the official announcement from the state.
