MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Demolition of the old Mitchell High School could begin as early as April 1, according to reporting from the Mitchell Republic on this week’s Mitchell Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Joe Childs said contractors are tentatively scheduled to begin tearing down the 1962 building next month.

The old school was replaced by the new Mitchell High School, which opened earlier this year. Demolition had been delayed because of paperwork issues connected to asbestos mitigation work completed in the early 1980s, though officials said the asbestos removal itself had been properly handled.

After the building is removed, the Mitchell School District plans to add parking, green space with a flagpole and new practice fields on the site. Childs also said the demolition may be livestreamed for the public.
