MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A proposed redevelopment of a fire-damaged property in Mitchell is set for review by city officials this week.

Mabee Eye Clinic has submitted plans to build a new facility at the former Perkins Restaurant & Bakery site along South Burr Street, according to the April 13, 2026 Mitchell Planning Commission agenda.

The property has remained vacant since the restaurant was destroyed by fire in 2023. Site plans show a newly constructed building designed to house an expanded eye care clinic, along with two adjoining commercial tenant spaces.

The clinic portion of the project is expected to include roughly 12 exam rooms, allowing for increased patient capacity and updated medical space. The additional storefronts are intended for future retail or service-based businesses, adding flexibility to the development.

Renderings submitted with the proposal depict a modern structure with a mix of brick, metal, and glass exterior finishes, along with on-site parking and improved access from South Burr Street.

If the project receives approval, it will mark the first step toward the redevelopment of the high-visibility corner that has remained empty for more than a year.
