MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The City of Mitchell announced Wednesday that its variance request for the Lake Mitchell Dam was approved during the latest Water Management Board meeting.

City officials said the approval marks another step forward for the Lake Mitchell improvement project, which has been under development as part of ongoing efforts to improve the lake and surrounding infrastructure.

With the variance now approved, the city will continue planning and preparation work connected to the project. Officials said the drawdown portion of the project is expected to go out for bids in the fall of 2026.
