MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — The details around the abrupt decision to postpone water valve replacements by the Mitchell Public Works Department on Thursday are starting to leak out.

During construction on Burr Street, the watermain that provides flow to the entire neighborhood broke. Emergency repairs are underway, but they are not expected to be completed for 10 to 12 hours. Homes and businesses on Burr Street between 2nd Avenue and Ash, E. 1st Avenue from Langdon to Mentzer and E. Hanson Avenue from Kimball to Mentzer have had their water shut off while crews fix the pipe.

The shut off is tentatively scheduled to last until 9 p.m. When service is restored, homeowners should run their faucets at a steady stream until any sediment that settled in the pipes has been flushed from the system.
