MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A heat advisory has been issued for all of southeastern South Dakota on Saturday.
The National Weather Service Sioux Falls office has listed the alert for noon to 8 p.m. due to expected temperatures around 100 degrees with high humidity. The conditions could lead to heat index values as high as 102 degrees.
Anyone spending time outdoors, like at Mitchell’s Arts in the Park, is encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and take precautions. Lightweight and loose-fitting clothing is the best possible wardrobe. Strenuous activities should be moved to early morning or evening hours. The last piece of advice is to be extra vigilant in looking out for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
If driving about, make sure to check the back seat of the vehicle when getting out. It takes 10 minutes for the inside of a cabin to reach lethal temperatures when the sun is beating down on it and the air temperature is nearly triple digits. Any child left inside will quickly be in extreme danger. Pets will also struggle in a car if left on their own.
