MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) A wet September could get even wetter in Mitchell as another round of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall moves toward the region.
Mitchell had recorded 5.05 inches of precipitation through Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. Normal precipitation through that point in September is 1.29 inches, putting Mitchell 3.76 inches above normal for the month.
More rain is expected beginning Thursday night.
The National Weather Service said showers and thunderstorms will move through the region Thursday night into Friday morning. Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches or more are expected along and north of Interstate 90, with locally higher amounts possible. Mitchell and Davison County are included in the area covered by the hazardous weather outlook.
The primary concern with the overnight storms is heavy rainfall rather than severe weather. The Weather Service said minor impacts to rivers and streams are possible.
The additional rain comes after a notably wet first half of September. Despite the month’s rainfall surplus, Mitchell’s precipitation since Jan. 1 remained below normal earlier this week, illustrating how a rainy September has followed a comparatively drier year overall.
Residents traveling Thursday morning may also encounter patchy fog, with locally dense areas capable of reducing visibility to one-half mile or less.
