MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is encouraging residents to safely dispose of expired or unneeded prescription medication during National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at participating collection locations, including pharmacies and law enforcement agencies. The service is free and anonymous, according to a news release from the attorney general’s office.
“This day is about preventing the misuse of expired or unneeded prescription medication,” Jackley said. “We are saving lives through efforts like this.”
Sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, National Drug Take Back Day is held twice a year and gives residents an opportunity to remove unwanted medication from their homes.
The April 2026 collection brought in 642,410 pounds of medication nationwide, approximately 321 tons, according to the DEA.
Mitchell-area residents and others across South Dakota can find participating collection locations through the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day website. The locator allows users to search by ZIP code, city, county or state.
