A joint legislative committee advanced Governor Larry Rhoden’s $650 million men’s prison plan on Tuesday with a 13-2 vote after extensive discussion on cost, size, and inmate care. Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen, chair of the summer Prison Reset Task Force, emphasized that the Sioux Falls penitentiary is outdated, and funding the project with existing state cash reserves avoids interest costs while addressing long-term public safety concerns.

Governor Larry Rhoden told lawmakers that replacing South Dakota’s 144-year-old state penitentiary is the state’s largest public safety investment.
