MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) South Dakota’s 2024 crime report shows a small uptick in criminal offenses, with the total rising by 1.21%. Violent crimes like homicides and aggravated assaults went up by 2.53%, but less serious offenses, like DUIs and disorderly conduct, actually dropped a bit. Homicides saw a big jump, from 18 in 2023 to 31 in 2024. There was also a slight increase in DUI arrests and drug offenses, especially related to meth and fentanyl. On a positive note, juvenile arrests and burglary numbers both went down. The report highlights that overall, South Dakota is still a safe place to live. The data is used to help law enforcement focus on trends and improve crime prevention efforts across the state.
