PIERRE S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A record 13 women will be Governors across the nation, five of them are Republican and eight are Democrats.  In New Hampshire, the race for Governor featured two women which was a first for the country.  Women are, or will be Governors after their inauguration, in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and South Dakota.

In the US Territories there are women Governors on the islands of Guam and Puerto Rico.

In the South Dakota Legislature there will be a record number of women as well.  Thirty-eight women will serve in this next session with a possibility of a 39th.  Joni Tschetter of Sioux Falls lost her race by 9 votes to Erik Muckey and that race is in the process of a recount.  The Democrats have selected two women to be their leaders, Liz Larson will be the Senate Democratic Leader and Erin Healy will be the Democratic House Leader.  Both women are from Sioux Falls.
