MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) (SDNEWSWATCH) During a stop in Mitchell last week, Governor Kristi Noem was asked about being Donald Trump’s running mate in the November presidential election.
She told the crowd that she would rather keep her current job.
The governor was asked if there is a plan in place should she be chosen as Trump’s running mate.
South Dakota News Watch reports that the South Dakota Constitution states that when the governor is “unable to serve by reason of continuous absence from the state, or other temporary disability, the executive power shall devolve upon the lieutenant governor for the residue of the term or until the disability is removed.” Also, five states have “resign to run” laws to prevent elected officials from neglecting state duties or using public resources while running for another office. However, South Dakota is not one of them.
