HURON — The clock expired as sophomore guard Addie Siemson lofted up a wild shot from the perimeter in desperation. It swished in, and the Mitchell Kernels girls basketball team walked out of the Huron Arena on Friday night with a 46-44 win over the Tigers on the opening night of the regular season.
Taylor Giplin led Mitchell with 13 points. Lauren Van Overschelde and Sawyer Stoebner both chipped in 10 points. Mitchell led 24-13 at halftime, but Huron was able to start hitting from range in the second half to close the gap.
Huron’s Heaven Gainey, scored the game tying shot with 15 seconds left to knot the game at 44-44.
Siemson’s game winner came on a broken inbound play to Stoebner. Stoebner was guarded tightly and tossed it to Siemson — who then tossed up the wild, game winner.
The Kernels next take on Watertown at the Corn Palace on Dec. 13
