Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation began with a simple but powerful idea from a young girl determined to make a difference. Alexandra “Alex” Scott was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer as a baby, and by the age of four, she set out to help doctors find a cure—one cup of lemonade at a time.
Her first front-yard lemonade stand raised more than $2,000, far exceeding expectations and inspiring others to join in. Over the years, Alex continued hosting stands despite her illness, ultimately helping raise more than $1 million before her passing in 2004 at the age of eight. Her legacy lives on through the foundation established by her family, which has since raised hundreds of millions of dollars to fund childhood cancer research and support families.
Today, that same spirit of grassroots action continues through creative efforts like the Lemon Head Challenge. This campaign invites people to take a bite of a lemon, capture their reaction, and share it—challenging others to do the same while supporting the cause. What may seem like a lighthearted, even humorous activity carries a deeper purpose: raising awareness and encouraging donations for pediatric cancer research.
Participants in the Lemon Head Challenge often go a step further by organizing lemonade stands, contributing funds, or sharing Alex’s story within their communities. Schools, businesses, and families have all embraced the challenge as a simple yet effective way to get involved.
Together, Alex’s original lemonade stand and the modern Lemon Head Challenge show how small actions can grow into a nationwide movement. From one child’s vision to a widely recognized nonprofit, the mission remains the same—finding better treatments and cures for children battling cancer, one act of kindness at a time.
