SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A proposed constitutional amendment by Rick Weiland of Sioux Falls aims to limit the South Dakota Legislature’s ability to change voter-approved measures for seven years after they are enacted. During this period, any changes or repeals would require a three-fourths majority in both legislative chambers and voter approval at the next general election. The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office has issued a neutral, fair explanation of the proposal, which is open for public comment until March 2nd. The final explanation will be submitted by March 12th. The proposed amendment requires just over 35,000 valid signatures on the petition in order for it to qualify for the 2026 ballot.
