There will be no school for Mitchell K-12, John Paul II, and Mitchell Technical College on Wednesday. Mitchell Tech will also be off on Thursday.
Another significant winter storm is expected to hit the Northern Plains this week. A winter weather advisory takes effect on Tuesday at 6 PM after a day where flurries and freezing rain could fall. A blizzard warning then takes effect at noon on Wednesday and remains in effect through noon on Thursday.
Jen Hacker with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says the most impactful part of the system will come Wednesday through Thursday morning. We will see an additional round of snow move in from the west with the intensity picking up midday Wednesday through Wednesday night. We could see one to two inches of snow to fall per hour, totaling 11-16 inches of snow with locally heavier totals.
Additionally, strong northeast winds of 40-50 MPH will create widespread blowing and drifting snow with visibility issues for those who are traveling.
Temperatures are expected to drop well below zero starting Wednesday. The temps will continue to drop Wednesday night and Thursday.
Anyone with travel plans over the next couple of days should strongly consider postponing those plans. If you must travel, call 511 or use the 511 app to check road and weather conditions.
