Mitchell firefighters were on the scene of a house fire on Sunday night. The call came in just after 8 PM. Dispatch was notified of smoke and flames in the basement of the house at 420 West 1st. Two people were home at the time of the fire. They were able to escape unharmed. When fire crews arrived, they found a small fire in the basement which was confined to a 3 X 3 feet area. The fire did not spread and was knocked down quickly. There was some property damage. Investigators were able to locate an extension cord in the area of the fire’s origin. The cord was deemed to be the cause of the fire. After the investigation was completed, the home was turned back over to the occupants.
