PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) One of the annual events held during the is a program recognizing farms and ranches in the state that have been in the same family for 100 years or longer. The South Dakota Farm Bureau and the state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will host the on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024.
Farm Bureau Executive Director Krystil Smit says they’ve honored over 3000 families since the program started 1984. A new category of farms 150 years old or older was added in recent years.
There are some specific requirements that must be met in order to receive the Century Farm and Ranch designation. Those wishing recognition must provide proof of the original date of the purchase of their farm ground, the farm must be at least 80 acres in size and operated continuously by the same family line over the period of the 100 years or more.
