Nic Gaspar rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for Dell Rapids St Mary as the Cardinals defeated the Potter County Battlers 44-42 in double overtime at the Dakota Dome in the first South Dakota high school football championship of the 2021 season.
Gaspar scored from two yards out in overtime to tie the game at 42-42. Potter County had failed on its previous two-point attempt. Cardinals quarterback CJ Smith connected with Gabriel Lindeman in the end zone to convert on the two-point try to win the 9B state title.
Smith completed 5-of-12 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
Potter County quarterback Grant Luikens was outstanding in the loss, rushing for two scores and passing for four more on 16-of-25 passes for 297 yards. Drake Bassett was Luikens’ favorite receiver with nine receptions for 173 yard and two touchdowns.
