MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Cybernews Chief Editor Jurgita Lapienytė is calling for urgent action after reports that Grok, the AI chatbot built into X, has been used by some users to generate nonconsensual sexualized images of women and minors.
In a statement shared with media, Lapienytė warned that “every woman with a photo online is now a target” unless changes are made immediately, and said the ease of use on a major platform risks normalizing “on-demand” exploitation. She said the problem is not new, pointing to earlier reporting about Grok’s ability to generate explicit deepfakes and arguing that repeated warnings went unaddressed.
A Reuters analysis and other reporting in recent days has described a surge of complaints and international scrutiny over Grok-enabled image manipulation on X, including concerns involving minors. European Union officials have called the material “illegal” and “appalling,” while Britain’s regulator Ofcom has demanded answers from X about how the tool produced such images.
The controversy has continued as xAI announced it raised $20 billion in an upsized Series E funding round, saying the money will support model development and computing infrastructure.
