PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A legal battle is brewing over a new South Dakota law that changes the timeline for ballot initiatives. The group Dakotans for Health has filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State after lawmakers passed House Bill 1184, which moves the deadline to submit ballot measures from May to February in an election year. Co-founder Rick Weiland says those spring months are critical for collecting signatures after the winter and calls the new law an attack on the ballot initiative process. The group plans to sponsor two ballot measures for the 2026 election. A hearing date in the case is expected soon. For more crime stories from MitchellNow.com, click here.
