MITCHELL S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Davison County Commission met on Thursday June 6, 2024. Sheriff Steve Haar recommended the hiring of Samantha Styles as a Deputy Sheriff to the Commission. Ms. Styles is currently a Sergeant at the jail complex. The Commission approved Sergeant Styles’ transfer to Deputy Sheriff status. She will complete in-house training and then attend the South Dakota Police Academy when they have a new class offering, sometime early next year.
Sheriff Haar also reviewed law enforcement agreements and found that terms and conditions of contracts between Davison County and the cities of Mount Vernon and Ethan hadn’t been updated since Dave Miles was Sheriff back in 2009. The current contract amounts are $30 an hour for up to 30 hours of law enforcement services a month. Sheriff Haar recommended a new rate of $50 an hour for up to 30 hours of service with an automatic 5% increase on January 1 for every subsequent year of agreed service. The Davison County Commission commended the Sheriff on his initiative and tentatively approved the agreement subject to seeing actual contract details.
Veteran Service Officer TJ Thomas asked the Commission for permission to use the Davison County Fairgrounds on September 14, for no charge, for a Veterans’ Benefits Fair. Representatives from the Veterans’ Department in Pierre, VA services and Veterans’ organizations will be present to answer veterans’ questions and to explain programs and services. The Commission unanimously expressed their support and likewise commended VSO Thomas for organizing the event.
