Delmar Gene Plamp was born March 24, 1939 to Viola & Milford Plamp in Hawkeye, Iowa. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to South Dakota and eventually settled in the Betts area. Being the only boy in a family of three children, Delmar quickly developed a love of farming and ranching. After the untimely death of his father, Delmar took over the management of his family’s farm at the young age of 12 years old.
Delmar was united in marriage with Diann Faye Hetland on September 20, 1957 at Victor Lutheran Church in rural Mt. Vernon, South Dakota. After their marriage, the couple moved to the Loomis area, where they lived for 50 years. The couple raised 4 children and made many memories over their years together.
Delmar was known for his larger-than-life personality and a smile that could light up a room. His favorite outfit included cowboy boots and a Stetson Cowboy Hat.
Delmar was involved in the community as a leader and volunteer. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he had served on the Congregational Council, was a Confirmation Leader, and a Sunday School Teacher. Delmar was a member of the Moose Lodge, named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1967, served on the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator Board of Directors for 30 years, and served on the association of Co-ops for 10 years. He was named the Parade Marshal for the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo in 2013. Delmar and Diann developed the Peace Light as a memorial to their daughter, Kim, after her untimely passing. In 2008, Diann suffered a stroke. Delmar was by her side providing loving support until her death in 2011. In 2012, Delmar met Jean Sexton. The two, both widows, found they had many common interests. They spent the past 9 years traveling and enjoying each other’s company. Delmar enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, and winter getaways to Texas.
