SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The state Department of Corrections has uncovered a drug smuggling operation at state prisons. According to a press release, corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko says the scheme involved fake product packaging, counterfeit legal mail, and visitors sneaking in drugs. The investigation linked three inmate overdose deaths this year to the smuggling, including two deaths just this month. The DOC is working with state and federal authorities and says charges may be coming. In response, no-contact visits have been enacted in some prisons, with more changes possible. Smuggling drugs into prison is a Class 4 felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. For more crime stories from MitchellNow.com, click here.
