MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium annual count of those homeless in 2023 was 1,282 people, an 8% decrease from the year before.  About a third of the homeless, 409 in the 2023 report were in Sioux Falls with the rest of the unhoused spread throughout the state, including Mitchell.

The number of homeless people in Mitchell range from 15 to 30 people a month, according to those who staff the Salvation Army in Mitchell.  Several concerned citizens have banded together to form Home 4 Now with the goal of establishing  a 20 to 30 bed facility to give shelter to those who have none.
