Dorothy Sattler, 87, of Lincoln, NE, died Monday, June 21, 2021 at Eastmont Senior Living Community in Lincoln. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, June 26, at First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 6:30 PM prayer service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dorothy Ann Sattler (Rehurek) was born May 20, 1934, on a farm near Tabor, South Dakota to Joseph R. and Anna (Dvoracek) Rehurek. She attended Koupal School #24 near Tabor, SD and graduated from Tyndall High School in 1952. She went to Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, SD. Later in 1967 she received her Bachelors degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD. She taught rural grade schools (Blachnick, Byrne and Koupal) near Tabor, SD for six years, 1952-1958. She sang in the choir and was the church organist in the Tabor Presbyterian Church for many years.

On May 16th, 1958 she married Wesley D. Sattler at the Tynadall Presbyterian Church in Tyndall, SD. She worked for the South Dakota Motor Vehicle Department in the Capitol in Pierre, SD from 1958-1959. Due to her husband’s work with the US Corps of Engineers, they lived in Pierre, Rapid City, Belle Fourche, and Mitchell South Dakota, and Titusville Florida. She resumed teaching in 1964. She taught at Prosper Center (1964-1966), Dimock Elementary (1967-1968) and then 21 years with the Mitchell School Systems, which included Plana, Bradley Young, and Litchfield Elementary. After 30 years of teaching, Dorothy retired in 1989, and was Mitchell’s “Teacher of the Year” in 1989.

Dorothy was active as a leader in Boy and Girl Scouts. She was also active in 4-H as a member for 11 years, and a leader for 18 years. She was a life-member of the Mitchell Area Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. Dorothy had been a former of AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, SDEA and NEA.

She was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mitchell, SD and served in many capacities: Trustee, Elder, Deacon, choir member and Bible Study group. Later Dorothy became a member of the First Reformed Church of Mitchell, SD, being active in the choir, Hope Bible Study and Care Committee. She was very active in volunteer work in her church and the community.

Dorothy resided in Lincoln, Nebraska since 2017 to be closer with family. She continued to stay active by doing arts and crafts, playing bingo, field trips to wineries, and helped teaching in Lincoln Elementary schools.

Dorothy was always involved with music and church, and was the happiest seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Survivors include: one son, Duane (Susan), Lincoln, NE; two daughters, VeeAnn (Carl) Ulrich, Englewood, CO, and Vonnie (Kevin) Tallon, University Place, WA; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wesley Sattler on Nov 23, 2001; five brothers: Alvin, in infancy; Calvin; Raymond; LeRoy; Lawrence; and four sisters: Viola; Marcella; Irene; and Ruth.
