Fatality in Friday afternoon Charles Mix County crash identified as 97-year old Corsica man

CHARLES MIX COUNTY, SD (MITCHELL NOW) The 97-year old Corsica man who died Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Charles Mix County has been identified. Preliminary crash information indicates Willard H. Barton, the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling eastbound on SD Hwy 44 about 2 miles east of Platte. For unknown reasons, Barton crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming 1994 Peterbilt tractor/trailer driven by 34-year old Blake H. Veurink of Harrison. The semi entered the north ditch where it overturned onto its side and came to rest. The Chevrolet Avalanche came to rest in the middle of the highway facing a northerly direction. Mr. Barton was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Veurink was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
