BROOKINGS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The South Dakota Department of Health says the state has recorded its first West Nile Virus death this season. Three human cases have been confirmed in Brookings, Marshall, and Spink counties, though officials haven’t said which county the death occurred in. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in seven locations statewide. Health officials remind residents to protect yourself by using insect repellent, covering up during dawn and dusk, and getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes breed.
