PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) A-A-R-P has announced its 2024 Community Challenge grant recipients this week, including several in South Dakota. Nearly 4-million dollars is going out to about 350 organizations nationwide to fund quick-action projects to make communities more livable. South Dakota organizations have received nearly 320-thousand dollars since 2017, supported by the state’s A-A-R-P chapter. Judy Larson administers grants for the town of Lemmon, with a population of about 11-hundred, and this is its third Community Challenge grant win. Larson says a past grant funded a portable dance floor that can be checked out from the Lemmon library. Larson says the grant has helped realize Lemmon’s community vision. The other South Dakota municipalities to receive grants this year are Edgemont, Gettysburg, Rosyln and Sioux Falls. AARP South Dakota State Director Erik Gaikowski says the grant fund projects focused on livable and walkable public spaces, transportation, community gardens and other plans that are especially beneficial to individuals ages 50 and over.
