MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) —Residents across Mitchell will have multiple opportunities to recognize and thank local veterans this Veterans Day weekend. From meals and music to community gatherings, here are five events planned to honor those who served in the armed forces.

1. Veteran’s Recognition Dinner – Sunday, Nov. 9

Where: Resurrection Lutheran Church, 4013 N. Main St.
When: 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
The weekend begins with a Veteran’s Recognition Dinner at Resurrection Lutheran Church. Veterans will be honored during the 9:30 a.m. worship service, followed by a dinner at 11:15 a.m. The public is welcome to attend and join in fellowship.

2. Veterans Appreciation Day – Monday, Nov. 10

Where: James Valley Community Center, 300 W. First Ave.
When: 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.
The James Valley Community Center will host its Veterans Appreciation Day, featuring patriotic music and desserts. Attendees are encouraged to bring a veteran as their guest for the midday celebration.

3. VFW Veteran’s Day Event – Tuesday, Nov. 11

Where: Davison County Fairgrounds, 3200 W. Havens Ave.
When: 10 a.m.–1 p.m. (Lunch at 11:30 a.m., Program at 12 p.m.)
This Mitchell event is hosted by American Legion Post 18, VFW Post 2750, and DAV Chapter 2740, along with their auxiliaries. This year’s guest speaker is retired Command Chief Warrant Officer Ken Schoenfelder of the South Dakota Army National Guard. Lunch is free for veterans and $10 for others.

4. Cabela’s Veterans Appreciation Breakfast – Tuesday, Nov. 11

Where: Cabela’s, 601 Cabela Drive
When: 9-10 a.m.
Cabela’s will once again host a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast on the morning of Veterans Day, inviting veterans to gather and share stories over breakfast. Guests should contact the store for specific serving times.

5. Local Observances and Closures

The City of Mitchell will operate on an adjusted schedule for Veterans Day. Garbage collection will take place early, from 7 a.m. to noon, and the Mitchell Regional Landfill will close at noon. The Corn Palace will also be closed in observance of the holiday.
