MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) A group of former Mitchell High School classmates has revealed what was inside a time capsule they buried more than two decades ago.

Kristin Chau (Williams), Kelsey Hearnen, Lindsey Engmark (Muth), and Kadie Martin (Neuharth) recently recovered the capsule ahead of the demolition of their former high school, a story previously reported by Mitchell Now. The friend group is sharing details about what they hid inside the capsule back in 2005. inside.

According to the friends, much of the capsule’s contents were damaged by water over time. Still, several meaningful items remained, including personal letters each of them had written, photographs, and memorabilia from trips they had taken together during their school years.

The capsule also contained a CD from their high school graduation, along with a DVD case from the popular early-2000s TV show Sex and the City — a nod to what was trending when the capsule was buried in 2005. They also felt the DVD was a good representation of their group of women who were best friends.

Despite the condition of many items, the experience of opening the capsule remained significant for the group.

“It was still so special to open it, even if some of the things didn’t survive,” they shared.

The moment has resonated with the Mitchell community, showing that while some of the memorabilia didn’t survive the test of time, the friendships behind it clearly did.
