There was a lot of action in South Dakota amateur baseball last night starting with the Sunshine League. The Winner Colome Pheasants have now won 11 games straight after winning in Emery vs the Raptors by the final of 6 to 3 thanks timely hitting and pitching as Winner’s Drew DeMers led Winner/Colome’s offense with two hits, drove in three runs and smacked a homer. Austin Calhoon had three hits, while Derek Graesser, Aiden Barfuss and Oscar Pravacek each had two hits. Reed Harter, Chandler Bakley and Dillon Lambley each had hits.
Conor Hopkins had another great pitching performance where he only allowed seven hits, two earned runs and three walks through seven innings. Harter earned the save after striking out three batters and allowing zero hits through two scoreless relief innings.
The Alexandria Angels bounced right back after a tough loss on Tuesday night vs the Raptors blanking the Platte Killer Tomatoes last night in Alexandria winning by the final of 12 to nothing. The Angels Cole Wenande led the way with four hits (two doubles), drove in two runs and smacked a home run. Jordan Gau added three hits and knocked in two runs. Tyson Gau, Pierce Smith and Reid Smith each had two hits. Reid Smith and Tyson Gau each drove in runs. Riley McSherry earned the win, striking out 12 batters and allowed four hits he is now 7-0 on the season
The Corsica Stickney Horned Frogs were big winners last night in Parkston as they rallied late to be the Parkston Mudcats by the final of 6 to five as the Horned Frogs Blake Moke’s ninth-inning RBI single was the difference. Moke finished 3-for-5 and drove in three runs, including his ninth-inning RBI that broke a 5-5 tie. Aaron Groeneweg went 3-for-5, while Brady Christoffels had two hits. Tyson Wentland and Nathan Blom each had hits. Wentland drove in two runs. Brady Christoffels earned the win, striking out six batters, allowing eight hits, three walks and zero earned runs through 8.2 innings.
The Parkston Devil Rays faced a high-powered offense last night in Menno as the Mad Frog put three big run scoring innings together in the 12 to 2 victory. The Mad Frogs scored 4 runs in the first, three more runs in the bottom of the fifth then an four runs in the bottom of the eighth to ice the Devil Rays. Menno’s Spencer Schultz four-RBI Day was the difference as he went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
In the Ponys Hills League the Kimble White Lake Nationals won their eighth game of the season as Kimble’s Dylanger Pierson batted 1-for-4 with a home run driving in four runs, Jaxon Christensen drove in two runs on three hits. Mitchell Price earned the victory on the mound for the Nationals allowing two runs on six hits and a walk, striking out seven.
The Burke Bombers bombed the Bankers last night in Plankinton winning by the final of 18 to 7. The Bombers Blake Boes batted 3-for-5 with a walk, double, and three RBIs. Blake Boes earned the victory on the mound for Burke in three innings, allowing one run on one hit and nine walks, striking out three.
It was the Evan Farner show last night in Chamberlain as the pitcher dominated for the Winner Demons tossing a complete game masterpiece in the win over the Chamberlain Mallards by the final of 3 to 2. Winner’s Evan Farner allowed five hits, one earned run and walked four batters in a complete-game performance on 133 pitches. Pierce Nelson had two hits, including a triple and drove in a run.
The Wessington Spring Owls were victorious last night at home beating Four Corners by the final of 8 to 4 as the Owl’s Blake Larson added two hits and two RBI. Dalton Mogck, Parker DeJean and Dylan Schimke each had two hits. DeJean drove in two runs.

The Mitchell Kernels will be hosting a volleyball camp on Monday July 15th and Tuesday July 16th at the Mitchell High School main Gym. The Mitchell Kernels volleyball camp features a morning and an afternoon session. The morning session is for 7th-12th grades and is from 9 am till noon and the cost is $70 per player. The afternoon session is for grades 1st through 6th grade and the camp cost is $45 per participant. The Mitchell Kernels volleyball camp will be coached by The Head coach of the Mitchell Kernels Volleyball team Deb Thill and her coaching staff. The SDGA is holding its oldest Championship this weekend at Brookings Country Club, the SDGA Match Play Championship. 64 Men, 28 Women, 32 Senior Men and 12 Senior Women will compete in the event. Some players were exempt into the Championship based on their past SDGA performance, and the rest of the players in the field competed in Local Qualifying at eight sites across the state. The field this weekend features several Mithcell area golfers and past champions including Ben Irlbeck, Elk Point (2012 Match Play Champion), Jeff Meyerink, Mitchell (2019 Match Play Champion). Senior Men – Brad Buche, Mitchell (2022 Sr Men Match Play Champion)
The Men and Senior Men start on Thursday, July 11 and the Women and Senior Women start on Friday, July 11. In each Championship, players are grouped into PODS of 4 players and each player plays a match against the other three players in their POD. At the end of POD play, the best records advance to single elimination bracket match play starting on Saturday, July 13. The semifinals and finals of all four Championships are on Sunday, July 14. The semifinals start at 7:30 AM and the finals at Noon.
The Womens match play pod six today features Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink vs Watertown’s Avery Palmquist and Mitchell’s Mia Larson vs Aberdeen Centrals Oliva Braun. The Mitchell city golf tournament is the weekend of July 13th and 14th at Lakeview GC. Both rounds of this year’s Mitchell city golf tournament will have two rounds of stroke play taking place at Lakeview GC. Tee times for both days will be from 8 a.m. to noon. For round one on Saturday, parings and tee times will be based on players flights. The competition includes a men’s championship and a handicap flight, a senior division and a women’s division.
