The Baseball Tournament had a great 2nd day last night at Cadwell Park with a great game right out of the gates. The Dimock Emery Raptors were victorious over the Lake Norton Lakers winning by the final of 7 to 2. Jason Schmidt drove in three runs as Dimock/Emery topped Lake Norden in the first round of the State B amateur tournament Thursday.
Schmidt batted 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs, Phil Johnson batted 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Sam Pischke drove in a run on two hits, Drew Kitchens had two hits, while Peyton Nash, Josh Engquist, and Chase Arend each had hits in the win. Phil Johnson earned the victory on the mound, allowing two runs on 10 hits, tossing seven strikeouts in eight innings.
For Lake Norden, Jordon Johnson took the loss allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk in 3.2 innings. Mick Tulson tallied an RBI-single, Matt Stevenson drove in a run, Dawson Noem had two hits, while seven other batters tallied hits in the loss. Dimock/Emery advances to the second round and will face Castlewood on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
It was the Castlewood Ravens over the Tabor Bluebirds by the final of 7 to 5. Castlewoods Kellan Benck drove in seven runs as Castlewood defeated Tabor in the opening round of the State B amateur tournament Thursday. Benck batted 2-for-5 with a double, homer, and seven RBIs, Gus Steiger batted 4-for-5, Peyton Garbers had two hits, including a double, Alex Gauer and Booker Schooley each tallied a hit and two walks, while Adam Ching and Jacob Tvedt each had a hit in the win. Kellan Benck earned the victory on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in four innings, striking out three.
For Tabor, Jared Miller allowed seven runs on 12 hits and six walks in eight innings, striking out 15 batters. Castlewood advances to the second round and will face Dimock/Emery on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
It was the Hartford Humbolt Wood Ducks over the Menno Mad Frogs winning by the final of 4 to 2. Logan Larsen tossed 12 strikeouts as the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks earned its first ever state tournament victory Thursday. Larsen went all nine innings, allowing two runs on four hits, four walks, and two hit batters, striking out 12 batters.
The Wood Ducks scored all four runs in the top of the fifth, Braden Herr drove in a run on three hits and a walk, Brayden Odegaard tallied a two-RBI double, Brodie Herr, while Austin King, Dawson Bakker, and C McDonald each tallied hits in the win. For Menno, Doug Hall allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in five innings, striking out two.
It was the Elk Point Colt 45’s upsetting the 18-0 Redfield DQ’S winning by the final of 7 to 1. Elk Point pounded 14 hits as the Colt 45s moved on to the Round of 16 with a victory over Redfield Thursday.
Preston Fejfar batted 4-for-5, Cole Nachtigal tallied three hits, Jaxon Hennies tallied two hits, including a double, Hunter Ingwerson tallied three hits and two RBIs, Ashton Pick tallied an RBI-single, while Keaton Gale and Jay Thaler each drove in a run on a walk. Jake Pruchniak allowed one run on six hits and three walks in five innings pitched, striking out seven.
For Redfield, Peyton Osborn allowed seven runs on 10 hits and two walks in six innings, striking out eight batters. Cooper Hainy batted 3-for-5, Brent Osborn drove in a run on two hits and two walks, while Bennett Osborn, Peyton Osborn, Keaton Rohlfs, Christian DeYoung, Nathan Hainy, and Owen Osborn each tallied hits in the loss.

The Mitchell Gun Club this past weekend hosted the South Dakota Junior Trapshooting Championships, and several Mitchell area girls and boys trap shooters had a great showing. The girl’s junior division was dominated by Trinity Wilson who won two individual championships in the 16-yard singles scoring 91 out of 1oo plus, she won the doubles discipline tallying 37 of 50.
Mitchell’s Trell Kaup did well winning the girls senior division winning the doubles and the handicap tallying 44 of 50 and 46 of 50 respectively. Mitchell’s Hadleigh Wilson did well ranking at the top of the leaderboard in the girl’s junior division in the handicap scoring a nice 44 out of 50. And, in the boys 12 and under division Mitchells Conor Herrlein won the 12 and under singles title was a score of 91 out of a possible 100 and marked 161 of 200 in three disciplines to claim the 12 and under boys’ division championship title.
The DWU men’s Elite Basketball Camp is on Saturday August 17TH and are for boys’ basketball players who will learn basic to advanced technique that feature progressive drills that will improve an individual’s game so they will be more skilled at the high school level. The camp instructors are the DWU men’s basketball coaches and players. The boys’ basketball camps are designed for instruction and coaching in and will be given in small groups to help campers master the skills that are covered. The DWU boys’ basketball camps are for boys entering the 9th grade through 12th grade. Check-in time is at 9:30 a.m. Saturday’s schedule is 10 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The DWU boys’ elite basketball camp is $40 per camper. The DWU basketball camps are being taught at the Avera Sports Complex. The best men and women golfers in South Dakota are in Rapid City this weekend at beautiful Meadowbrook Golf Course for the 2024 SDGA Amateur Championship. Play begins on Friday, August 9 and concludes on Sunday, August 11. Tee times start at 7 AM each day, and the leaders in both the Men’s and Women’s Championships will tee off on Sunday at about 11 AM-Noon.
