The Dakota Wesleyan Tigers Football team kicked off the 2024 season on the road against their rivals Dakota State in the 9th annual Ag Bowl contest, where the Trojans improved to 6-3 record since their inception in 2016.  The Chamber of Commerce traveling cup returned to Madison, as the Trojans won for the seventh time in the last eight meetings.  DSU also improved to 4-0 record all-time in Ag Bowl contests versus DWU at home.

The Dakota State Trojans scored first thanks to a 52-yard field goal from Carson Sauseda earning the first lead of the game at 3-0 with 3:38 on the clock. Then the Trojans struck again as finding paydirt for the first time this season was the Trojans Tyce Ortman as he rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 4:05 remaining before halftime.

The Trojans Tyce Ortman was the workhorse in the third quarter as he raced to paydirt again with a 25-yard touchdown run to widen DSU’s lead to 19-0 with 3:14 left.  Sauseda hit the PAT extra point kick to extend their lead to 20-0.

Tigers would get on the board in the fourth quarter as the Tigers Jaxon Patrick a 30-yard field goal as the Tigers cut into the DSU 20-3 lead with less than 14 minutes to go in the game. But the Trojans would force the Tigers into five turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles lost) in 34-3 victory in their new stadium.  It was the debut at the Brian Kern Family Stadium on Blankley Field at Beacom PREMIER Complex in both teams’ season football opener in the NAIA. The Tigers now head home to host the Mount Marty Lancers at home at Joe Quintal Field on Saturday night starting at 6 p.m.

The Mitchell Kernels Boys golfers did well in their second invite of the season finishing in 5th place as a team with a total team score of 306. Asher Dannenbring shot a great round splashing three birdies in route to -1 under 71 to finish in 8th place with a score of 71. Marshall Widstrom was 8th with a 77 score. Carter Mc Cormick finished in 31st place with 78 round score.

Mitchells Everett Morrison finished 43rd with a round total of 80. Jordan Meyerink shot an 81 and the Kernels Brady Reiners shot an 85 finished in 45th and 59th respectively. The Mitchell Kernels boys golf team also had a great showing in Huron yesterday in the Huron Invite. The Kernels boys Everett Morrison led the way shooting a +2, 74 and tied for 7th. Asher Dannenbring continued his great play shooting a +5 77 and tied for 20th. Marshall Widstrom was 30th with a 79 score. Carter Mc Cormick finished in 42nd place with 81 round score and the Kernels Brady Reiners shot a +9 81. The Kernel boys Jordan Meyerink carded a 90. The Kernels hit the links today vs Brookings.

The Mitchell Kernels teams in action on this Friday include Golf with the Kernels boys competing in a Varsity Invitational vs Brookings @ Brookings Edgebrook GC 10 am. Tennis action features the Kernel girls in a Varsity Invite vs Rapid City @ Rapid City Sioux Park 1 pm. Boys Varsity golf competing in a Invitational vs Brandon Valley @ Brandon Valley GC 2   pm A Kernels Volleyball Varsity game vs Sturgis @ Mitchell HS main gym 5 pm. The Mitchell Kernels Football Varsity game vs Box-Elder @ Joe Quintal Field 7 pm.

Mitchell Kernels girl’s tennis team is on a roll to start the 2024 season. They won easily Friday in a home dual at Hitchcock Park beating the Harrisburg Tigers by the final of 8 to 1 as in-flight singles Megan Mastel lost her first match 6-3 7-6 (7-3) but then in-flight singles #2 Carson Weich was a big winner 6-2 6-0. The Kernels girls Katie Morgan then followed suit winning by the final of 6-1 6-0 in her flight # 3 and Elly Clement won her flight # 4 6-0 6-4 as well and winning flight singles # 5 was Matteah Graves winning by the final of 6-0 6-0 and Mia Larson won her flight # six 6-0 7-5.
