MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — Gov. Larry Rhoden reaffirmed his commitment to supporting South Dakota farmers and ranchers during remarks at the 110th South Dakota Farmers Union (SDFU) State Convention, held December 10–11 in Huron.
Rhoden, a Union Center rancher, shared his longstanding connection to the organization, noting that Farmers Union played a significant role in his upbringing. He also spoke about how mentorship within the group helped him overcome a longtime fear of public speaking.
Addressing current economic concerns, Rhoden pointed to declining state revenues and challenging crop prices. He told producers that the state’s economic health is directly tied to the agriculture industry. The governor also described recent advocacy work in Washington, D.C., including meetings with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins regarding criminal charges brought against a ranching family in a federal land dispute. The charges were later dropped.
Producers at the convention said Rhoden’s direct experience in agriculture resonates with them. “He is from an ag background so he understands,” said Harding County rancher Kaeloni Latham.
Rhoden closed his remarks by emphasizing the resilience of South Dakota’s early homesteaders and said that same work ethic continues to define the state. “For as long as I’m governor, I will work to maintain that sense of good old-fashioned work ethic and help your neighbors,” he said.
The convention also featured speakers from National Farmers Union, South Dakota Farmers Union, the Beef Checkoff, and industry experts.
