MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) After nearly four months of construction, South Dakota Highway 38 east of Mitchell will reopen to through traffic today. The highway has been closed since late March for bridge approach work at the James River and Firesteel Creek bridges. Project officials say the work wraps up just behind schedule, part of a $6.3 million project also rebuilding Highway 37 in Mitchell. That work continues through late October. Starting today, eastbound traffic on East 38th Street will detour to East 54th Street through August 4. Drivers should expect some delays and a 12-foot width restriction in the construction zone.
