MITCHELL, SD (Mitchell Now) — A state highway just east of Mitchell shuts down on Monday, with construction expected to keep it closed through November.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation is reminding drivers that Highway 38 will be a no-go zone between 421st Avenue to Highway 25 initially. In September, the work zone expands east to 430th Avenue. While local traffic will still be able to reach homes and property along the stretch, through traffic will be detoured onto Highway 81 near Salem, before taking Interstate 90 west to Riverside Road. The detour will be marked.
Crews will be grading the roadway, installing pipes to improve drainage and reduce the ability for water to pool on the road. Intersections will be revamped to improve traffic flow and bolster safety. The project covers close to 12 miles of roadway.
The winning bidder is Loiseau Construction. They intend to complete the project for $8 million.
