PIERRE, S.D.  (MITCHELLNOW) The discussion over creating educational savings accounts for some South Dakota students is still ongoing in Pierre. House Bill 1009, one of two bills on the topic, was deferred after a hearing on Wednesday and will be taken up again on January 29th. Lawmakers said they need more time to fine-tune the bill and determine its cost. Representative Dylan Jordan, the bill’s sponsor, says the goal is to fund each student’s education, no matter what school they attend. However, education groups have expressed concerns, warning that the proposal could take money away from public schools during a tight budget year.
