SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Prison officials are confirming three inmate deaths tied to drug overdoses so far this year, all in Sioux Falls. One happened at the state penitentiary, and two more at the Jameson Annex next door. Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko says drugs are getting into the facilities through mail, packages, and even being thrown over the prison wall from nearby North Drive. Attorney General Marty Jackley says four inmate deaths are under investigation, with most tied to suspected overdoses. He calls it a serious public safety issue, saying drugs like fentanyl, meth, and K2 are circulating behind bars and often trafficked by inmates or brought in by visitors. The Department of Corrections is ramping up training and tightening security, and Jackley says more criminal charges tied to these deaths could be coming soon.
