Jerry Allen Renken, age 84, of Mitchell, SD died Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital. Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Will Funeral Chapel with burial at Graceland Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Will Funeral Chapel.
Jerry’s pride in his Mitchell roots was unwavering, often reminiscing about his high school days under the mentorship of Joe Quintal. His fond memories included encounters with luminaries such as The Three Stooges, Red Skelton, Jesse Owens, and countless other stars who visited Mitchell.
With a passion for sports that defined his life, Jerry was a multi-talented athlete in high school, excelling in basketball, football, baseball, and track. His dedication continued at Dakota Wesleyan University, where he played football for four years. After college, Jerry went on to become a high school social studies teacher, football coach, and basketball coach. During his coaching tenure at Cresbard, his teams boasted an impressive record of 29-3 over four unforgettable years.
In 1969, Jerry embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship when he married Jackie Keena at Holy Family Church. Together, they raised three boys: James, Josh, and Jared. As their family grew, so did their joy, with the arrival of six cherished grandchildren who brought endless love and laughter into Jerry’s life.
Jerry is survived by his wife Jackie, two sons; Josh (Tammy) of Mitchell, Jared (Kathy) of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; Gage Renken, Reed Renken, Ande VanRoekel, Ana (Matt) Tribble, Alli Renken, Audie Renken, brothers Randy and Neal Renken, as well as many brother-in-laws, sister in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son James, parents, Fritz and Bernice, and many aunts and uncles.
