LaVonne (Brutty) Schmit, 91, of Mitchell, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Friday, April 29, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Church of Epiphany Cemetery in Epiphany, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:30 Rosary on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Will Funeral Chapel.
Lavonne was born February 27, 1931 to John H. and Francis (Janzing) Brutty on the family farm west of Epiphany. She attended grade school at St. Marys in Epiphany before going to Burbank for three years, she finished High School at Edgerton Consolidation in Farmer, SD. LaVonne graduated in 1949. She then worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mitchell, SD.
In 1951 LaVonne married George Schmit and the couple lived on the Schmit family farm. LaVonne and George were married for 66 years and 3 months before his passing in 2017.
In 1971 they moved to Mitchell and she worked at the Elks Lodge.
Health issues caused her to move to Country Side Living in June of 2018.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sons; Douglas M. (Roxy) Schmit, Spearfish, SD, Gregory J. (Dixie) Schmit, Sioux Falls, SD, Brother; Robert (Carol) Brutty, Brookings, SD, 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and her beloved cat.
LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters, Louella Schledweiler, Marcella Ehlke and brother, Donald Brutty.
