SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) In two weeks, South Dakota legislators will meet in a special session to decide the fate of a proposed 650-million dollar men’s prison to be built in Sioux Falls. The prison proposal was defeated by the full legislature in March and has had its ups and downs since. The most recent challenge was a call from 20 lawmakers for the removal of Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko, saying they had no confidence in her leadership. State Senator Kevin Jensen of Canton opposes the project.  He says the secretary’s resignation may be enough for the plan to win approval. One of Jensen’s main concerns are the estimated 30-million dollars in additional operational costs the new prison would bring. The special legislative session is set for September 23rd.
