BUFFALO, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) – Fire crews are working diligently to reign in the Travers Fire in Harding County.
Harding County officials were keeping residents updated through the night on their social media channels as the Buffalo Town Board and others worked with property owners that border the northwest corner of town so they could do an additional fire line.
Kathy Glines, Harding County Emergency Manager, says these were safety precautions and that Buffalo was not in immediate danger.
Still, she says the swirling winds have tested firefighters, but crews are making some headway. Glines says fire crews are being very cautious as there are still several places along the fire line that are still hot, and a good gust of wind could cause it to flare.
They are monitoring the weather closely and using this opportunity to stabilize the fire lines. The fire is estimated to have burned approximately 8,000 acres thus far.
